Californian Paintings

2015

Series of works made during the period of resident artist at Hooper Projects, Los Angeles, US

Belén is not a painter. It is her background in sculpture that informs her approach to the tradition of painting. Not comfortable with what she sees as the limitations of the frame and flat surface, for her, fabric in the place of canvas is treated as a three dimensional object. As such, she utilizes the structural elements of painting to remove them from the limitations of the trope.

The frame is no longer purely a support, it becomes a part of the visual language she’s employing. Viewed as sculpture, the fabric becomes the image.
